Emergency Medicine Department Overview

Establishment and Leadership

The Emergency Medicine Department was established in 2016 by the then Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Padma Shri Prof. Ravi Kant, with the vision of providing holistic and quality emergency medical care. Prof. Haider Abbas, the founding Head of the Emergency Medicine Department, began developing the department from the Emergency Room to its current state, including the Emergency Critical Care Unit.

Key Milestones

Sanctioning of Posts: Medical and paramedical posts were sanctioned for the department, including faculty, Senior Residents, and Junior Residents. International Recognition: The department has hosted international and national delegations, including visits from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Trust, London, and the University of North Carolina, USA. Accolades for Prof. Haider Abbas: He has been awarded FRCP Edinburgh, FRCP Glasgow, FICS, MAMS, FCGP, and the ICMR International Fellowship.

Progress and Expansion

Under the leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Bipin Puri PVSM, VSM (Rtd), the department achieved significant progress, including securing five MD Emergency Medicine seats from the National Medical Commission in 2022.

Mission and Objectives

Patient Care: To provide quality holistic patient care in the Emergency Medicine Department.

Education and Training:

Quality teaching, training, and research for postgraduates of Emergency Medicine and other disciplines.

Education and training for nurses and paramedics in providing optimal emergency and acute care.

Quality education for undergraduate medical and nursing students.

Training for doctors, nurses, and paramedics from other institutions in emerging areas of Emergency Medicine.

Departmental Upgrades: To meet international norms and standards in patient care, education, and research.

Academic Programs

MD Emergency Medicine: A postgraduate course leading to an MD degree, with selection through the National Eligibility Entrance Examination (NEET). Training: Three years of training exposing residents to diverse emergencies, including pediatric and adult cases, with rotations through other departments for comprehensive emergency management.

Skills Development: Training in emergency procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, central line insertions, fracture management, and toxicology.

Academic Activities

Daily Academics: Bedside clinics, journal clubs, seminars, and lectures. Regular Evaluations: Quality evaluations through audits (death, CPR, 72-hour revisit, and discharge audits).

Publications and Conferences: Encouragement for publications and presenting papers at national and international conferences.

Teaching Programs

Residents, Interns, and Undergraduate Students: Weekly seminars, case discussions, and journal clubs.

Simulation Training: Training for medical and paramedical staff on a state-of-the-art simulator for managing various emergency conditions.
